Grading System
Here is an overview.
Each course will have two separate course grades:
- An Academic score and will be based on students' scores on their summative assessments.
- A Habits of Learning score that is will be based on student scores on the Habits of Learning standards throughout the course.
- We will be using an average to calculate these scores.
We will only be reporting scores on a 1-4 scale for this school year. Grades can be recorded by teachers in only .5 intervals (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 etc...).
To be passing you must have a 2.5 or above.
Middle School: Formative and Summatives
For Middle School this year, we will be calculating grades slightly differently. There will still be three types of assignments: Formative, Gateway Formative and Summative. The way the grade is calculated is what is changing. In Alma, there are two scores that you need to be aware of: the Standard Mastery Level and the Overall Class Grade. The Standard Mastery Level is a students level of mastery on each individual standard in a course. The Overall Class Grade is the score a student receives in the course the summarizes their overall performance.
To come up with the Standard Mastery Level, middle school will be using a weighted mean, where Formative and Gateway Formatives will be weighted at 1, and Summatives will be weighted at 4. For each standard, the mastery score will take the 5 most recent scores in that standard and come up with a weighted average.
To come up with an Overall Class Grade it will be an average of all the standard mastery levels for the course.
High School: Formatives and Summatives
-
In the High School, the correctness of a formative assessment will not count towards a student's grade. Students should view formative assessment as the practice and skill development that will get them ready for the summative assessment. Formative assessments can be graded for being complete and on time and this will be reflected in the habits of learning.
-
Certain formative assessments that will be marked as Gateway Formative Assessments. This means that these formative assessments must be completed in order to take a summative assessment.
-
Summative should be graded for correctness and used to assess proficiency.
-
All summative assessments must be attempted up to the teacher's standard or you will receive an incomplete in the class.
-
If you miss the deadline to complete the incomplete you will have to retake the class
-
If any summative is submitted outside of the 2 week window it will not be graded, but looked to see if completed up to teacher's standard.

This file outlines the "2024-2025 L&G Habits of Learning" across four categories, each with a 1-4 rating scale (Beginning, Approaching, Proficient, Distinguished)
Reassessment Policy
- Summatives can be reassessed when the following conditions are met:
- The student completes necessary formative assessments/tasks with a score of 2.5 or higher before the reassessment.
- The student scored below a 2.5 on the summative.
- The student must complete the request to reassess form: Request to Reassess Form. The form can be completed with the teacher. Teachers will have a digital version available and might edit the form to suit their needs.
- The student has not yet taken a reassessment for this summative. Students are allowed one reassessment per summative assessment.
Late Policy
- Academic work will not be marked down because it was done late.
- Lateness of assignments will be reflected in the Habits of Learning grade
- Summatives are not allowed to be accepted for credit when they are more than two weeks late.
Deadlines for Reassessment
Students must submit a request to reassess within 2 days of receiving the graded summative. Upon being cleared for a reassessment, students have 2 weeks to submit their new summative. (If students cannot make this deadline, they must provide convincing work that demonstrates they have made significant effort towards reassessment.)
If a student is absent on the day of the summative, they have two weeks to complete the summative.
Grading Expectations
-
Teachers are expected to input grades on to Alma at least every 10 days
-
All Summative Assessments MUST be recorded in Alma
-
Gateway Formatives MUST be recorded on Alma with academic standards attached. These do not count toward your final grade but should communicate where you are on the standard assessed
-
Formative Assessments are not required to be input into Alma, but they may be at the discretion of the teacher.
Honor Roll
This year there will be two separate Honor Rolls. One will be based on the overall academic score students achieve in their courses and one will be based on their Habits of Learning score in their courses.
Academic Honor Roll High School:
- High Honors: All overall course grades are 3.5 and above.
- Honors: All overall course grades are 3.0 and above.
Academic Honor Roll Middle School:
- High Honors: All overall course grades are 3.5 or above, with the exception of one score being a 3.
- Honors: All overall course grades are 3.0 and above, with the exception of one score being 2.5.
Habits of Learning Honor Roll:
- Both middle and high school
- Honors: All overall Habits of Learning in each Habit and in each course is above a 3.5
Students that have incompletes in any of their classes are not eligible for honor roll.
Incomplete/Credit Recovery
Incomplete
Provided for a semester grade under extenuating circumstances (such as a medical emergency) or if students' have not attempted every summative assessment given in a course.
Students granted an incomplete must complete the missing work within two weeks of the next semester.
Credit Recovery
Students are eligible for credit recovery if they did not complete or failed only one summative. Students must request and have a plan in place for credit recovery within 4 weeks of the next semester but must complete the work by the end of the following semester. If the teacher the student originally took the course with is no longer at the school, the student must find another teacher within the department to oversee the credit recovery work.
